How to transfer photos from Android to computer

"How to transfer photos from Android to computer? I have a Samsung with some pictures I want off of it since I upgraded to a smartphone. I've tried plugging it up to my computer, but it doesn't show any picture or sound files on the phone through Windows Explorer. Is there something I'm missing or do I need some kind of software?
