How to import AVI to Adobe Premiere Elements

"In Premier Elements I can not open an AVI file: I got the message PRE does not support this file, or an installation of Codec is necessary. According PRE AVI file should be supported?"

AVI is a container also called wrapper, Its the codec that is inside that determines whether or not it will be supported. Well, it comes down to codec, various codec’s play a role in almost every AV file. You may noticed that, AVI can play pretty well in Windows Media Player, VLC Player or QuickTime Player, but can not work with Adobe Premiere Elements.

That is what we’re faced with, when dealing with most AV files. We think that the file is an AV file and will probably contain either Audio, Video or, in many cases, both. Still, we do not know what flavor is inside the wrapper. We can "sniff" the wrapper, but still do not know for sure.

Adobe Premiere Elements is built around a DV-AVI workflow. (DV-AVIs are AVI files that use the DV codec.) This means that DV-AVIs flow easily through it and place the least strain on the program and, ultimately, your system. Unfortunately, not all AVIs use the DV codec, and many (such as video from still cameras) can cause real problems for Adobe Premiere Elements.

Therefore, it is necessary for you to determine which codec’s you have properly installed, you can use a free program named G-Spot ,drag one of your AV files to it, it will give you almost every bit of information on that file. It works most thoroughly with .AVI’s but also will give info on .MPEG’s, .WMV’s and .MOV’s.

If you get AVI files in other codec other than DV codec, it is sad to say that you are refused to import AVI to Adobe Premiere Pro for editing unless you convert AVI videos to Adobe Premiere Elements supported videos.
